Labour Day is on September 2, 2002 this
year. On April 15, 1872 the Toronto Trades Assembly
organized the first North American "workingman's
demonstration". Although Labour Day was first
celebrated in New York on September 5, 1882.
International Literacy Day is September
8th. International Literacy Day is to promote and
increase reading and writing skills among Canadians.
The Terry Fox Run will be held on
September 15. Terrance Stanley Fox was born in
Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28, 1958 and raised in
Coquitlam, British Colombia. When Terry was 18
(1976), he was diagnosed with bone cancer and
forced to have his right leg amputated in 1977.
He was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer
patients Terry decided to run across Canada to raise
money for cancer research, he called his run the
Marathon of Hope. Terry started in St. John's,
Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. He ran about 42km a
day. On September 1 after 143 days and 5,373km Terry
was forced to stop outside Thunderbay, Ontario
because cancer had developed in his lungs. Terry
passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.
Almost $300 million dollars has been raised in
Terry's name from the annual Terry Fox Run. For more
